Personal and business correspondence and other papers, many of which relate to Cox's service as assistant assessor of internal revenue in the 6th division of the 5th district of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service in North Carolina. Letters relating to surveys and operations of distilleries, including a brandy distillery. Letters of the Civil War period contain references to Federal prisoners in Richmond. Postwar correspondence includes discussions of such public topics as the Fourteenth Amendment, President Grant, the campaign of 1868, state and national politics, the Republican and Democratic parties, and President Wilson's appeal to the American people to buy bonds during World War I.
